Sustainable Economic Development: Meaning, Challenges and Strategies

The debate on economic development centers on how to promote economic growth that is inclusive of both society and the environment.

The challenge is to improve the quality of life of millions of people without drastically harming the environment.

What is sustainable economic development?

There is no consensus on a single accepted definition of sustainable economic development. However, some definitions are generally accepted:

In simple terms, sustainable economic development is a model in which development integrates society’s economic, social and environmental goals in order to maximize human well-being in the present without compromising the ability (the right) of future generations to meet their own needs. This definition draws on the principle formulated by the UN Brundtland Commission in 1987, which defines sustainable development as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

According to the World Conservation Strategy (1980): maintaining essential ecological processes and life-support systems, preserving genetic diversity and ensuring the sustainable utilization of species and ecosystems. In other words, it means pursuing economic development through the conservation of natural resources.

This new approach emphasizes meeting the basic needs of the poorest, bringing about cultural change and increasing community participation in development processes. But these processes must be environmentally sustainable.

Challenges of sustainable economic development

Sustainable economic development combines elements of sustainability with economic ones. This poses an enormous challenge for the various sectors of society, especially because it runs counter to the dominant economic consensus.

One of the key elements of this approach to development is cumulative causation. It explains how poor people, in trying to survive, cause extensive environmental damage that leads to losses in the short and long term. Examples include overgrazing an area with livestock, farming without letting the land rest (which causes erosion), or cutting down trees to make charcoal.

The problem is not that people’s survival is put ahead of the environment, but rather the extreme inequality and lack of opportunities that force many people to destroy the environment in order to survive.

That is why one of the direct concerns of sustainable economic development is to raise the living standards of the poorest. This can be measured quantitatively in terms of available food, real income, health and education services, sanitation and transportation, among others.

In other words, the main goal of sustainable economic development is to reduce absolute poverty, ensuring a high quality of life while minimizing the use and degradation of natural resources. This means that aggregate economic growth (GDP growth) takes a back seat. This challenge is especially relevant in cities, where there are more challenges and opportunities for achieving this kind of development.
