About Us

Desarrollo Sustentable is a publication about the environment, natural resources and sustainable development. We have been publishing since 2013 and the site now holds 210 articles, including 163 country profiles of natural resources.

Who is behind it

This is not a newsroom. It is an independent editorial project run by one person: Juan David Montoya, an economist from the Universidad de Antioquia who has covered the environment and sustainable development since 2013, from Medellín, Colombia.

He writes, verifies, edits and publishes every piece of content on the site, and answers personally for every figure that appears on it. We say so explicitly because knowing who signs the work — and that it is someone identifiable and reachable — is part of being able to trust what you read.

What we do, and why

Good environmental data exists: the World Bank, the FAO, the USGS, the United Nations and the OECD all publish it openly. The problem is that it is scattered across dozens of databases, in tables designed for specialists, and almost always in English.

Our work is to go into those databases, pull out the indicators that matter for each country and turn them into something you can grasp at a glance: comparable tables, maps and visualizations. We do not produce original research; we make existing research accessible.

How that data is collected, processed and updated is documented in detail in our editorial standards and methodology, where we also explain how we correct errors and what role artificial intelligence tools play in producing the site.

How the site is funded

Desarrollo Sustentable is funded exclusively by Google AdSense advertising, which is what keeps the site running and being updated. Google selects the ads automatically: we do not choose the advertisers and they have no say in what we publish. We do not run sponsored articles and we do not sell links.
